Today we heard the word satvik bhojan from many people.  what is satvik? Satvik which is derived from Sanskrit word "satva" and the satva means it consists all type of satvas(properties) such as "pure, essence, nature, vital, energy, clean, conscious, strong, courage, true, honest, wise, rudiment of life". Satvik bhojan is apart from any kind gunas such as rajasic( food which increase the energy of the body ) and tamasic ( food which decrease the energy of the body). In Ayurveda it is considered that such type of should decide the human behaviour. Means in simple words, the food which you eat decides your behaviour and body state. Satvik food is also considered as yogi/yogic food, because yogi's in india preferred to satvik food to maintain their peace, mediation, healthiness, etc.


significance of a satvik diet

It is light in nature, easy to digest, mildly cooling, refreshing and not disturbing to the mind. It is rich in prana (purity), so promotes positive thoughts, happiness and satisfaction. Such type of food can leave us calm, alert and refreshed.' It is different from other kinds of food as it is smooth and pleasant to the stomach.



What is satvik food?

satvik food is simple and grown organically on rich fertile soil. Foods are of attractive appearance and are harvested at the correct time. Satvik food is a food which are grown and ripened naturally. Satvik food can believed to clean the mind and body leading to physical and mental health.

Satvik food is Cooked on low flame with large time and consumed within 3-4 hours after cooking. It does not include red chilli, roasted spices, etc. But you can add green chili ( in moderate ) and raw( garlic, onion, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, basil, corainder, cumin, ajwāin, fenugreek, etc ). moderate means neither too much nor too little.

Food which can be eaten seasonal and which is free from rajasic(excessively pungent, sour, spicy and salty) and tamasic(food which is not fresh or stale, tasteless, unripe, spoiled, unnatural, weak, unclean) gunnas. With this it include milk products, nuts, seeds, oils, ripe vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and non-meat based proteins. Fruits are the important part of satvik diet, you have to include different type of ripened fruits daily in your satvik diet. you can also include milk and milk of products such as yogurt, cheese, paneer, butter, ghee, etc. You can include sweeteners such as jaggery, honey, raw sugar(unprocessed/ unrefined)).

Bhagwat Gita and satvik food

According to Bhagwat Geeta, “Every human being is born with innate faith, which can be of three kinds gunas—sāttvic (mode of goodness), rājasic(mode of passion), tāmasic(mode of ignorance).”  And the quality of our faith is decided by the nature of our mind. “The faith of all humans conforms to the nature of their mind". In simple words, those who are in tamo guṇa are drawn toward the evil. Those who are rājasic get drawn towards power, wealth, sensual enjoyment, revenge, etc. Those who are with sattvik guṇa become attracted to good qualities, good work.

Behavior according to triguna food

1) Rajasic:
Rajasic foods create sensuality, greed, jealousy, anger, fantasies, egotism and irreligious feelings.
             - food example:  bitter, pungent, hot, pungent, sour, spicy, salty, etc.

2) Tamasic:
Tamasic foods consume a large amount of energy during digestion and leads to intense mood swings, insecurity, irritability, cravings, etc.
             - food example:  dry, old, bad smelling,  stale, tasteless, unripe, spoiled, unnatural, weak, unclean, etc.

3) Sattvik
Sattvic foods is pure, essential, natural, vital, energy-containing, clean, conscious, true, honest, wise, etc.such type of food provide necessary energy to the body.
             - food example: organic nuts, vegetable, whole grain, legumes, etc. 


Cautions:

• satvik food is to be chewed properly and eat slowly not fast.

• add salt and spices(raw) in moderate amount.
               Note: spices are added raw for cooking.

• it should be eaten in moderate amount.
             
yoga is also very important with satvik food to live healthy and disease free.
              Note: in ancient literature both state that Mitahara (eating in moderation) is an important part of yoga practice.

do not overcook satvik food because it's properties are disintegrated or lost.

Satvik food and tridosha

Tridosha (vata kapha, pitta): According to Ayurveda, our body consists of three type energies Vata, Pitta and Kapha and believed to govern physiological activity.whereas these three energies constitute of five energy(panchatatva): Ether (Akash), Wind (Vayu), Fire (Agni), Water (Jal) and Earth (Prithvi). Differing proportion of these tridosha leads to disease
           - pitta: fire(Agni), Water (Jal).
           - kapha: Ether (Akash), Wind (Vayu).
           - vata:  Water (Jal) and Earth (Prithvi).
 Their  proportions determine individual temperament and physical constitution. In simple words, doshas are these three attributes or energies that make up every individual.

       •Vata - it is a  energy that controls motion such as blood circulation, breathing, blinking, and heartbeat.

       •Pitta - it is a type of Energy which controls metabolic work s such as digestion, absorption, temperature.

       •Kapha - this type ot dosha/energy supplies water to all body parts and balance  immune system.

Satvik food is one of the best food to balance tridoshas. Means balances motion, metabolism, water supply and immunity of body by providing al vital nutrients in moderate amount.

Notes: 1) satvik food can improve the health and quality of your skin and hair.

             2) with the satvik food you can also include different types of watered or not milk tea, such as ginger tea, pepper tea, clove tea. But in moderate.

             3) Such type of food can increase stamina, peace, fitness, immunity, long life, strength of body and body organs. It is one of the best food which used in ayurveda and panchakarma from long time.

             4) some people believed that satvik food excludes onion and garlic.

             5) If you are susceptible to diseases such as high BP, diabetesand any other long term or short term disease then such person should take satvic food, which enhance their resistance against disease. 

             6) all season fruits are included in satvik diet.

             7) some tamsik and rajsik food can be converted into satvik by slow heating, sprouting or keeping them in water overnight.

             8) satvik food/diet helps to improve or develope circadian rhythm or sleep-wake cycle of the body.
