                             Garlic



The substance which is found in each and every Indian kitchen is garlic. It is one of the most important spice to enhance the taste of food. It has been used both as a food flavoring and traditional medicine. It shows curative and medicinal properties because it is antibacterial, anti inflammatory and  antiseptic nature.

It shows antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, antiviral, antifungal properties


Vitamin and mineral content in Garlic

vitamins :  B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, choline and vit. C
minerals :  magnesium, magnese, iron, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, zinc, sulphur. 
• amino acids : arinic , Asparagic acid, methionine etc.
enzymes : allinase.
volatile compounds : allylalcohol, allylthiol, allylpropyl disulphide etc.
thioglycosides : Scordine, Scordinine a1, A2, & B etc.
sulphur compounds : allacin, ajoene, diallyl polysulfides, vinyldithiins, S-allylcysteine.

Use of garlic

Cough and Cold:

Raw garlic has the potential to resist a cough and cold infections. Raw garlic is also helpful in congestion.

Tip :1) eating two garliy cloves on empty stomach in morning is good to increase the immune
       2)  Eating garlic with triphla churana

Cardiac Health:

Allicin, a compound found in garlic stops the oxidizing of LDL (bad cholesterol). This reduces the cholesterol levels and improves heart health. Regular consumption of garlic reduces the incidence of blood clots and thus helps prevent thromboembolism. Garlic also lowers the blood pressure so is good for patients with hypertension.

Brain:

Garlic good for brain health because of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It shows resistance against neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s and dementia).

Digestion:

Raw garlic is helpful in improving digestion and reduces the digestive problems (constipation, nausea, diarrhoea, acidity).it destroys the bad bacteria and protects the good bacteria in the gut.

Balance Blood Sugar:

According to research, garlic is helpful in balancing blood sugar level

Tip: eat raw garlic daily on empty stomach

Boosts Immunity:

Because of antimicrobial, antiviral properties, it resist the infection. Zinc and vit. C in it fights the infection and increase the immunity.

 Skin Health:

Garlic helps prevent acne and lightens the acne scars. Cold sores, psoriasis, rashes, and blisters can all benefit from the application of garlic juice. It also protects against UV rays and therefore prevents aging.

Weight Loss:

It increases the metabolism of the body which leads to burning of fat




Note:
           1) as it contains large amount of potassium, nitrous oxide and allyl sulphide which is helpful to reduce blood pressure. Because sodium increases the blood pressure

           2) It also act as anticoagulant

           3) The sticky juice within the bulb cloves is used as an adhesive in mending glass and porcelain

           4) bad breath after eating garlic is due allyl methyl suphide(AMS). AMS is an volatile liquid

           5) it also contain large amount of antioxidant which protect against free radical

           7) Garlic reduces infections on wounds, promotes hair growth, bone health and liver health

           8) garlic leads to burning of more fat and lowering of LDL (bad cholesterol).

           9) it also helpful in detoxification of body

           10) garlic paste tobe applied over joint pain, pain, stiffness. Because it improves blood circulation at paining area and reduces inflammation

            11) people with pitta body type could eat garlic by boiling garlic with milk. Because milk reduces spiciness and hotness of garlic.
             Tip: add equal amount of water and milk and some garlic pills(removing husk). Boil the mixture till half. You can eat pills and drink milk.

            12) garlic balances kapha and vata but increases pitta.

Use of garlic according to ayurveda:

1) in winter, it can be taken with jaggery and ghee for better body function and provide heat to body

2) garlic oil or paste is used to treat vata and joint pain

3) it is the best remady for vata, cough, pitta

4)bark of indrajava and garlic is helpful to treat mulvyadh(piles)

5) garlic with ghee or milk is helpful in tuberculosis
